Tatooine, a fictional planet is the Star Wars universe, makes an appearance in every Star Wars film except for The Empire Strikes Back. The iconic dessert planet is the home world of Luke and Anakin Skywalker and plays an important role in the history of the Star Wars universe and the plots of the films. To recreate the appearance of a planet so dry that the inhabitants set up water collection stations to pull the moisture out of the air, George Lucas and company headed to Tunisia and the northern reaches of the Sahara Desert.

The planet was originally named Utapau but, in honor of the town Tataouine located near the desert sets, Lucas renamed the planet to Tatooine. Despite decades out in the dessert, most of the manufactured sets remain entirely intact. Furthermore, many of the sets were actually constructions from past civilizations in Tunsia–such as fortified granaries that make appearances in the series as Tatooine dwellings. So although the majority of the locals have no idea what Star Wars is and have never seen the movies, they leave the sets and historic buildings alone as they draw in tourists and adventurous film crews.
